NEWBERRY SPRINGS, Calif. — A day without a visible wildfire does not mean outdoor burning is automatically permitted. The Newberry Springs Fire Department maintains a public Burn Information & Permits page reminding residents to check several separate requirements before lighting a burn pile.
Which rules apply?
The department directs property owners to verify current fire restrictions, permits, authorized burn days, wind and weather conditions, and Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District guidance. Air-quality permission and fire safety restrictions are separate requirements. One agency showing a burn day does not override a ban or hazardous weather warning issued by another.
Why not rely on a static screenshot?
The department’s webpage contains several status explanations — permitted, restricted and suspended — and readers must identify the actual live status rather than interpret all those blocks as simultaneously operative. Conditions may change during the day, especially in windy desert weather. The safest approach is to check the linked fire and air-district updates immediately before any proposed burn.
What about large burn piles?
Disposal of vegetation, construction debris and household trash is governed by different rules. Do not assume backyard burning of any material is legal simply because a permit exists for another type of fire. Ask the responsible fire agency about allowed fuels, setbacks and clearance requirements. For any uncontrolled fire, call 911.
