NEWBERRY SPRINGS, Calif. — Fire protection in this rural desert community is delivered by a locally governed fire department rather than directly by the countywide fire protection district. Newberry Springs Fire Department says it is operated by the Newberry Community Services District and provides emergency response across approximately 114.2 square miles.
Which station operates?
The department’s official overview explains that it has two station designations but operates from Fire Station 392. Calls can include structure and vegetation fires, medical emergencies, traffic collisions, hazardous conditions and rescues in widely separated desert locations. A service-area map does not guarantee a specific response time at any remote property.
How does mutual aid work?
The department identifies partner agencies including Barstow, San Bernardino County Fire, Yermo/Calico, Daggett, Fort Irwin and the Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow. Mutual aid can bring additional resources to significant incidents, depending on availability and agreements. It should not be interpreted as meaning every neighboring agency permanently staffs Newberry Springs.
Who sets the budget?
The Community Services District’s five-member board provides financial and policy oversight, while department leadership handles operations and training. Residents seeking information on fire equipment or staffing should use the district’s board meeting process rather than assume a city council exists for the unincorporated community. For an actual emergency, call 911.
