NEWBERRY SPRINGS, Calif. — Residents seeking relief during dangerous Mojave Desert heat can ask about a locally designated cooling center. The Newberry Community Services District identifies its community building at 30884 Newberry Road as a location where people may step out of the heat and access drinking water when the cooling center is activated.
Is the building always an overnight shelter?
No. A designated cooling location does not mean it is open 24 hours a day or provides overnight accommodation. Activation, operating hours and staffing can vary with an individual heat emergency. Residents should call the CSD at 760-257-3613 or check its current announcement before traveling.
What about other services?
The district’s website also includes facility-rental forms and references to local community support programs. Those functions are separate from emergency cooling-center availability. A reserved event, holiday or closure could affect ordinary building access even though the district has used the site for heat relief.
How can households prepare?
Keep drinking water available, know how to recognize heat illness and plan transportation to a confirmed cooling center before temperatures become dangerous. People using electric medical devices should also prepare for possible outages. Severe confusion, fainting or signs of heatstroke require immediate medical help; call 911 rather than waiting for a community building to open.
